If you are getting ready to move, there are a few things you should get started on. Many people can procrastinate when it comes to moving, so here’s a few tips that will help you get started right away! On average, you should get started a month in advance! Read below to see 5 tips for an organized move!

Tip #1: Book Your Moving Truck ASAP

Many people leave booking a moving truck or movers until the very end, but it’s actually better to book them AT LEAST a month in advance. Waiting two weeks before your move date might make it difficult for you to find anyone that’s available. You do not want to end up in a situation where you can’t find available movers and have to end up asking your friends who own a truck for help!

Tip #2: Purge Your Home Before You Pack

Get rid of all non-essentials in your home. If there is anything in your current home that you don’t plan on ever using in your new home, you shouldn’t spend the time, effort and money on moving it. Purging your home can seem overwhelming, so we recommend doing it one room at a time. Purge one room a day until you have gone through all of your belongings.

Tip #3: Start Packing ASAP

The sooner you start packing, the better! Just like with purging, take it one day at a time. We recommend packing at least one box every single day until the day you move. Make sure to label every box with the room it will belong to and make a list on the side of the box listing the items it contains. This may seem like a lot of work for just packing but trust us, it will make it so much easier for when you unpack in your new home.

Tip #4:  Pack Your Valuables Separately

If you plan on hiring a moving company to help you with your move there is one thing you should move yourself and that is your valuables. You don’t want to risk losing things such as expensive jewelry, important paperwork or anything that may be of value to you. It’s better to be safe than sorry!

Tip #5: Create An “Open Me First” Box

Most of the time when people move, they label boxes according to every room (which is the correct thing to do) but if you think about it, once you are all moved in, you need things from multiple boxes (rooms) right away! An “Open Me First Box” will help you and will contain things that you will most likely need right away. This box should contain things such as sheets set for each bed in the house, shower curtains, toiletries, frying pan or pot, paper plates, bowls & cups, plastic cutler, paper towels, garbage bags, dish soap and toilet paper. Just like with your valuables, you should move this box yourself so you can have it readily available.

Moving can be stressful and not fun at all but it can be less stressful and less not fun if you follow these tips! Avoid procrastination and make sure to plan and organize as much as possible.

Now I love to play basketball and stay fit working out, go to the beach, and chase the kids together with my wife with our growing family.
